In Public In Private: poetry with Leyla Josephine

  • the bookshop alehouse 21 Portswood Road Southampton, England, SO17 2ES United Kingdom (map)

In this live poetry performance Leyla Josephine explores secrets, faith, lust, and death without shame. She questions her urge to share her inner life publicly, and fearlessly reaches out to you and asks ‘Have you felt this too?’.

Leyla Josephine has performed her poetry alongside Kae Tempest, Hollie McNish, John Cooper Clarke and Lowkey. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4, BBC The Social, The Guardian Online, Buzzfeed, Huffington Post, Upworthy, The National and The Scotsman. Her work features in the US anthology Choice Words: Writers On Abortions alongside the likes Margaret Atwood, Audre Lorde and Gloria Steinem.

“There is not a poet alive today who writes about the inner lives of women as well as Leyla Josephine” - Jodi Picoult

Here, Leyla will be performing poems from her first collection ‘in public / in private’ exclusively. It is described by Hollie McNish as "Beautiful, uplifting, gutting. I read it from start to finish without a breath."

45min performance, followed by an exercise inviting the audience to create a ‘Self Portrait’ poem of their own. Doors at 6.45pm for a 7pm start.
